We have a new law in Indiana that allows us to set forth our wishes concerning the disposition of our remains at death in a legally enforceable document. The new law, which took effect July 1, 2009, authorizes the use of “Funeral Planning Declarations”.
The following are some of the matters that can be covered in a Funeral Planning Declaration:
- State whether the body is to be buried or cremated.
- Specify the cemetery at which the body is to be buried, or the manner of disposition of cremated remains.
- State the funeral home at which any services are to be obtained.
- Articulate any specific funeral arrangements that are desired.
- Designate the person(s) who are to make all other necessary arrangements.
